The Illinois State Board of Elections has closed the window for standard online voter registration, leaving residents one final in-person method to secure their ballot before the November 3 general election.

Online registration in the state ceased recently and will not reopen until November 5, following the election. For those who have not yet confirmed their status, the grace period rule allows new registrants to sign up and cast their vote on Election Day itself. This process requires voters to present two forms of identification. One of these documents must verify their current residential address. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, state ID, bank statement, lease agreement, or utility bill. Upon verification, the voter must immediately cast their ballot.

Grace period registration is available only at specific in-person locations. These sites include local county clerk offices, designated early polling places, and select Election Day sites. Residents are advised to contact their local election authority to confirm specific addresses and operating hours in their area.

Many Cook County residents may already be registered through a process known as automatic registration. State law mandates that individuals who visit Illinois Secretary of State office locations are automatically registered to vote unless they explicitly opt out. This often occurs when people visit these offices to obtain a Real ID. In such cases, the voter registration is tied to the address listed on the identification document.

Residents can verify their current registration status through two primary digital tools. The Illinois State Board of Elections provides a lookup feature on its website. Users must enter their first name, last name, date of birth, and zip code to retrieve their status. Chicago residents also have access to a city-specific search tool. This platform provides additional details, including the user's precinct polling place or the nearest vote center. It also allows residents to view sample ballots and check the status of any previously submitted vote by mail requests.

The general election is scheduled for November 3, 2026. Voters who rely on mail ballots or online registration have until the close of business on Election Day to ensure their requests are processed or their status is active. The grace period registration serves as the final administrative step for eligible citizens who have not yet completed the standard registration process.
