Rosa Hernandez Riviera died on Thursday, ending a two-week hospital stay that began after an apparent road rage shooting in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood.
The 32-year-old mother of five was shot around 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 22. Police said an unidentified driver pulled up beside the vehicle she occupied with her boyfriend and two children. The driver opened fire near the intersection of West 47th Street and South Western Avenue. No arrests had been made as of Thursday afternoon. Hernandez Riviera's sister, Sonia Hernandez, stated that police are now treating the case as a homicide.
Business surveillance video captured the event. The footage shows a minivan being followed closely by another vehicle. Alderman Raymond Lopez of the 15th Ward described the suspect as a driver who was angry about an incident that occurred several blocks earlier. Lopez said the driver felt entitled to open fire once the vehicles reached a red light. He called the decision to follow a car for a mile and resolve anger with a bullet nonsensical and senseless.
Lopez posted on Facebook that witnesses identified the shooter's vehicle as a gray four-door Toyota Scion with a rear bike rack. Reports indicate the driver fled south on Western Avenue after the shooting. No additional details were available immediately.
