Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the Bears, will continue to wear Caddix cleats during games even as the league imposes fines for the brand. The National Football League permits only Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour to display logos on game day footwear. Williams wore black Caddix cleats with a visible logo against the Falcons, resulting in a fine of $11,941. He wore the same brand again Thursday against the Patriots, and a second fine is expected.
Williams stated on Wednesday that his primary focus is playing for his teammates. He explained that if the cleats provide a small advantage and result in a monetary penalty, he will continue to use them. "I'm focused on being able to be out here for the guys," Williams said. "And if that can give me a small percentage up [as a fine] and it works, then that's what I'm gonna do."
The Caddix company promotes its "smartstuds," which flex and release during movement to reduce stress on joints. Approximately 40 players wear the cleats, including former star Tom Brady. Williams noted that he wore all-white Caddix cleats earlier in the season without receiving a fine. When asked if the shoes mitigated a hamstring injury sustained against the Vikings, Williams declined to give a definitive answer.
"If I had that answer, I'd be a trillionaire and sitting somewhere nice …" Williams said with a smile. He added that his ankles, knees, and feet have felt less strained while wearing the Caddix cleats compared to other footwear. He described the difference as his personal opinion.
Jack Rasmussen, the CEO of Caddix, issued a statement confirming that the company will pay any fines assessed to Williams. This financial arrangement allows the quarterback to keep his preferred footwear without bearing the personal cost of the league's uniform rules.
