Formula 1 raced at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, this weekend. The event marks the return of the sport to the United States. It is one of three US races on the schedule. Unlike Miami and Las Vegas, which use temporary street circuits, COTA is a permanent facility with wide run-off areas.

Motorcycle racer Kevin Schwanz designed the track layout. Herman Tilke’s company handled the buildings and infrastructure. The circuit features varied corner speeds, heavy braking zones, and elevation changes. It has been on the calendar since 2012. Early years saw low interest that threatened its inclusion. It is now a major draw for dedicated fans.

The site has expanded significantly since the inaugural race. Grass banks surrounding the track now hold hospitality structures. A cable car connects one of these structures to the main paddock building. The new facilities include two swimming pools. The venue’s skyline now features roller coasters and other amusement rides.

These additions are part of a diversification strategy. The track now functions as a theme park, concert venue, and racing facility. The site hosts other motorsport events, including the Lone Star Le Mans races for the World Endurance Championship and IMSA in September. The current layout allows for various uses beyond Formula 1.

The expansion includes more landscaping and built amenities. The permanent nature of the track distinguishes it from other American venues. The combination of racing and entertainment draws crowds during the F1 weekend. The facility continues to serve as a central hub for motorsport and leisure activities in the Austin area.
