Lamine Yamal leads the artificial intelligence predictions for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. The French data firm Avisia assigns the 19-year-old Barcelona winger a 23 percent probability of winning the award. This puts him ahead of Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe in the model's output.

Bookmakers tell a different story. They view Kane as the outright favorite with approximately 70 percent of the betting market. The England captain is listed as the closest rival to Yamal in the AI data, holding a 21 percent probability. Mbappe ranks third at 19 percent, tied with Rodri, the 2024 winner. Lionel Messi rounds out the top five with an 18 percent chance of a record ninth title.

The statistical case for Mbappe is strong. He is La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and the leading marksman in the Champions League with 15. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot and set the record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Lionel Messi recorded 82 in 2011-12. Despite these numbers, neither player won a major trophy with their club or country during the cycle.

Yamal's case rests on team success. He won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Recent history favors players who win major titles. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners failed to lift a Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America trophy in the year they were honored. If Yamal wins, he will become the youngest recipient, surpassing Brazilian Ronaldo, who was 21 in 1997.

Player opinions are split. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports Messi, stating that the Argentine played at his age after the World Cup. Former Italy international Marco Materazzi agreed, arguing that Messi is in a different league at 38. Jude Bellingham backed Kane, calling him a hard-working and honest person. Anthony Gordon sided with Yamal, describing the Barcelona player's performance at such a young age as ridiculous. Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Tchouameni praised Mbappe for an incredible season.

The award will be presented at the London Palladium. The ceremony marks the end of the voting period for the best player of the 2025-26 season. Avisia claims it correctly identified the top five finalists for the 2025 award, which Ousmane Dembele won.
