National Adoption Month in Illinois begins with a call to action for local families and communities.

Melvin Faulkner, interim president and CEO of Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois based in Oakbrook Terrace, wrote to the Chronicle on Nov. 3. He outlined the agency's mission to secure permanent homes for children who cannot be reunited with their birth parents. Faulkner stated that while family reunification is the primary goal, adoption serves as a critical alternative for children who have experienced trauma or loss.

The CEO noted that many children waiting for adoption in the state are older youth, sibling groups, or children with special needs. These groups often face longer waits for families willing to take them in. Faulkner emphasized that these children seek the same love and acceptance as younger children, requiring families prepared to offer daily support rather than just a promise of care.

Lutheran Child and Family Services aims to build stronger communities by helping families care for vulnerable children. Faulkner encouraged Cook County residents to consider roles beyond formal adoption, such as fostering or providing support through churches, workplaces, and neighborhoods. He argued that not everyone is suited to adopt, but all residents can help children experience stability and belonging.

The letter coincides with other community correspondence in the Chronicle. Christine Anderson of Jefferson Park addressed Congress, referencing a recent local vote where approximately 500,000 Chicagoans voted no to specific national policies. Anderson described the ballot as a rejection of issues ranging from foreign wars to inflation. She expressed hope that the legislative response would bring justice and an end to corruption.

David Schulze of Glenview submitted a comment regarding Justin Ishbia, the pending owner of the Chicago White Sox. Schulze suggested that Ishbia should move the Sox and the Chicago Bears to Sheridan Road in Winnetka. He proposed converting Ishbia's $77 million property, a building described by neighbors as an eyesore, into a domed stadium to serve both teams.

These letters reflect the diverse interests of Cook County residents during the current legislative and civic cycles. The Chronicle continues to publish letters from readers across the region to document local perspectives on national and regional issues.
