The final days of the Chicago school board president election have been defined by millions of dollars in outside advertising. Most of that spending targets Hilario Dominguez, the current board president, who faces challengers Jessica Biggs and Victor Henderson.
Dominguez recently spoke with FOX Chicago reporter Brandon Pope about the financial pressures facing the district. The interview focused on Dominguez's efforts to secure funding from Springfield. Pope asked the candidate how he would address a $150 million budget gap if the state does not provide the necessary money.
The campaign also grappled with a closed investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior. The investigation involved a 17-year-old student while Dominguez worked with the nonprofit Resurrection Project. The news of the investigation prompted 16 Chicago alderpeople to call for an independent review.
Dominguez uses the interview to outline his priorities for Chicago Public Schools. He addresses the funding dispute as a central part of his platform. The contest has drawn significant attention due to the volume of outside money entering the race.
Jessica Biggs is scheduled to speak with Fox Chicago on Thursday. Pope also requested an interview with the Henderson campaign. The candidates continue to campaign in the days leading up to the vote.
The race remains closely watched by residents concerned about the direction of the school district. The spending and the investigation have shaped the final stretch of the campaign.
