Takuya Nakamura performs at Subterranean on Saturday, November 28. The event starts at 9 p.m. and tickets cost $33.14 for attendees 17 and older. The venue is located at 2011 W. North Avenue.
Nakamura is a dance producer and multi-instrumentalist based in New York City. He began playing trumpet as a child in Japan. He moved to Boston in the early 1990s to study jazz. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music and studied under pianist George Russell. He later joined Russell's Living Time Orchestra.
In 1993, Nakamura heard drum and bass at a Boston venue. He learned to DJ and formed a band that improvised jazz-influenced drum and bass live. By the early 2000s, he stepped back from those fast-paced sounds. He continued to blend jazz with electronic music in his work.
He self-released the album Pleasure Seekers in January. The record moves between different dance subgenres. Tracks include the downtempo song Swan and the polyrhythmic track We Change. The album also features the deep-house title track. Nakamura plays trumpet on the record, providing a sharp sound that connects the different styles.
His performance style has gained online attention. He plays trumpet while spinning dance tracks. A 2025 set for the Chicago-based platform Elevator has over 700,000 views. The Subterranean show follows his November debut for Fabriclive on the double LP Shape the Future.
