President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was "a little bit surprised" by the outcome of the midterm elections, in which Democrats projected to gain control of both the House and the Senate. In an interview, Trump acknowledged that Republicans had hoped for a stronger showing.

"I thought we would do better," Trump stated. He cited the size of his campaign rallies as evidence of Republican enthusiasm, noting that thousands of supporters were turned away from events.

The president attributed the losses to several factors, including the performance of Republican candidates and high gas prices stemming from the war in Iran. On his social media platform, Trump posted that he was not on the ballot and asserted that he would have won in a landslide if he had been.

During a phone interview, Trump suggested that voters disagreed with the specific Republican nominees. "But they didn't agree, and they didn't like the candidates in most cases, just one of those things," Trump said. He noted that while many Republicans were elected, the number was not sufficient to maintain a majority.

Trump played a direct role in several high-profile races. In Texas, he endorsed Ken Paxton over incumbent John Cornyn in the primary. In South Carolina, he backed Darline Graham for the full term in her late brother Lindsey Graham's seat. Both Paxton and Graham were projected to lose their races on Tuesday.

The president also criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who lost his bid for a fourth term to Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa. Trump called Abbott a "RINO," or Republican in Name Only, arguing that the governor's return to his original formula contributed to the defeat.

Looking ahead, Trump said he is willing to work with Democrats to ensure things go well for the country. He said he would consider striking an immigration deal if he deemed it appropriate. However, he emphasized his veto power, posting a photo of a red hat with the word "VETO" across it. Trump explained that even if Democrats pass many bills, he will send them back with a "nice stamp veto."
