Aurora Christian defeated Winnebago 42-14 Friday night in the first round of the IHSA Class 2A football playoffs. The win improves the host Eagles' season record to 9-1 and secures a home game in the second round.

Sophomore Luke Baumann accounted for 210 total yards and two touchdowns for Aurora Christian. He caught six passes for 150 yards and a score. He also carried the ball five times for 60 yards and another touchdown. Junior running back Jalen Callaway added 193 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.

Baumann described a shift in his athletic priorities during the season. He started the year focused on AAU basketball, which involved traveling across the country. He mentioned that he considered quitting football after his freshman year, where he served as a long snapper. He now views both sports as equally important options for his future.

"I was thinking about quitting football," Baumann said. He added that he has told his coaches he is open to playing college football if that is the path he takes.

Quarterback Jesus Vasquez completed seven of 11 passes for 225 yards and one touchdown. He threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Carson Moreno. Moreno also recorded an interception. The offensive line and Callaway contributed to Baumann's production, with both running backs taking direct snaps out of the Wildcat formation.

Baumann credited the offensive line and Callaway for his success. He noted that opponents focused on stopping Callaway, allowing the Eagles to fake runs to him and throw to Baumann on the opposite side. Two of Baumann's large gains came on screen passes of 27 and 29 yards. A third play, a 62-yard touchdown catch, was erased by a penalty that took out 41 yards.

Baumann secured the touchdown on the next play after the penalty. He caught a long pass from Vasquez near the end zone. On defense, Baumann has recorded a team-high six interceptions this season. His defensive performance complements his offensive role as a running back and safety.

Aurora Christian coach David Beebe praised Baumann's mindset. Beebe noted that Baumann is not afraid in his first playoff game. The Eagles will host Maroa-Forsyth in the second round next weekend. Maroa-Forsyth holds a 9-1 record and defeated Oregon 49-18 in the first round.
