The Gift Theatre has opened its new production of Hayward, a play by Netta Walker, at the Steppenwolf 1700 space. The performance focuses on the emotional dynamics of a Black family during a period of mourning. The story draws on classical works like Hamlet and Electra to frame its narrative.

The plot begins at the funeral of Tony, the family patriarch. Actor Watson Swift portrays Tony, a man described as a notorious ne’er-do-well. His imperfect family gathers to grieve, but the event is complicated by Pastor Johnson. Alfred H. Wilson plays the pastor, whose judgments are louder than his condolences. The play’s setting features a church interior designed by Sydney Lynne.

The cast includes a trio of older siblings: Leila, Eric, and AJ. Sydney Charles, Victor Musoni, and Gregory Fenner play the roles, respectively. They squabble while attempting to protect the youngest sibling, Luna, from family secrets. Ireon Roach portrays Luna, a character haunted by her father’s memory. Shanésia Davis plays Maria, the family matriarch, whose thin veil of respectability threatens to explode the group’s dynamics.

AmBer Montgomery directs the production. The play is described as a darkly humorous tale that explores the family’s demons. Reviews note that the middle section of the play can feel repetitive, though the character development of Maria provides a strong emotional anchor. The performance schedule runs through November 22.

Tickets are available for $53, with a student rate of $18. Showtimes are set for Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 3 PM. The venue is located at 1700 N. Halsted. Information and sales are handled through steppenwolf.org and thegifttheatre.org.
