A 25-year-old woman died after being shot multiple times inside the Walmart North Supercenter at 1100 5th Avenue in Hammond, Indiana. The incident occurred just after 9 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2026.
Hammond Police Department Captain Steve Kellogg confirmed in a written statement that the store, which opened to customers at 6 a.m., was the site of the deadly violence. An off-duty officer working as a security guard reported the shooting to police and stated that a suspect was already in custody when units arrived.
Police identified the gunman as an 18-year-old male employee. Authorities said the two coworkers had a verbal argument that turned physical before the man opened fire. He walked a few aisles, placed his gun on the ground, and waited for officers to take him into custody.
The woman was pronounced dead from her injuries. Hammond Fire Department units and the Lake County Coroner responded to the scene. Video shared on social media showed several police vehicles parked in the store's lot.
A Walmart spokesperson said the company is heartbroken by the events at the Hammond location and is working closely with authorities. The store will remain closed for the rest of the day. Police described the incident as isolated and said there is no known threat to the public.
Captain Kellogg extended the department's condolences to the victim's family, friends, and coworkers. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
