Wrigleyville residents will gather on Clark Street for the 30th annual Twelve Bars of Xmas, known as TBOX, in December. The event, which has operated since 1996, is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 12.
Christopher “Mister” Festa, the 60-year-old founder, stated in a social media video that this will be his final year producing the crawl. Festa said he is ready to close this chapter of his life after three decades of organizing the party. He described the decision as a natural progression, noting that he has avoided growing up in many ways but feels 60 is the right age to stop.
The announcement does not confirm if another organizer will take over the event. Festa said the 2026 crawl will be his final production, leaving the future of the tradition unclear. He encouraged participants to attend, describing the experience as unique and full of energy.
TBOX began in 1996 as a small gathering of friends at Goose Island Brewpub on Clybourn Avenue. The crowd size has expanded steadily over the years. By 2003, more than 2,000 people attended. By 2010, the number had risen to over 10,000. Organizers estimate that more than 250,000 people have participated in the event over its 30-year history.
The crawl features approximately 20 bars in the neighborhood. Participating venues include Old Crow Smokehouse, Stolen Saddle, Moe’s Cantina, and Pilot Project Brewing. Participants, who must be at least 21, receive admission to these bars, breakfast buffets, and drink specials. Tickets are currently available for as little as $5 during a limited-time promotion.
The event has also served as a fundraising vehicle for local groups. Over three decades, TBOX has raised more than $370,000 for charities such as Nourishing Hope, formerly Lakeview Pantry, and the Lakeview East Community Partnership. A portion of this year’s proceeds will add to that total.
The crawl will open with ceremonies at the Cubby Bear, located at 1059 W. Addison St. Participants will move between bars throughout the day before returning to the Cubby Bear for closing ceremonies at 7 p.m. The event is known for its elaborate costumes, including Santa suits and elf outfits, which have become a hallmark of the Wrigleyville holiday season.
