The Miami Heat unveiled a revised version of the Dwyane Wade statue outside their arena on Friday. The update focuses on the sculpture's head, which had drawn sharp criticism since the monument's debut two years ago. Fans and observers noted that the original face bore little resemblance to the former NBA star.

Wade consented to the modification after reviewing the public reaction to the piece. He explained the decision in an essay published on Friday. Wade stated that he asked himself if people felt a connection when looking at the original face. He noted that the team listened to those questions and held honest conversations with the artists involved.

The original statue depicts Wade hopped onto a courtside table. This pose references a game against the Chicago Bulls in March 2009. Wade made a winning shot in double overtime to end that contest. As he jumped onto the table, Heat fans shouted that it was his house. The new head aims to improve the likeness while keeping the body in that specific celebratory stance.

Workers completed the new head in the days leading up to Friday. A plywood box covered the sculpture to hide the changes from the public. The Heat released photos of the updated statue shortly before Wade's essay appeared online. The franchise did not change the rest of the sculpture, only the facial features.

Wade described the original work as an artistic version of a real moment. He said the revision is not about erasing the previous work or disrespecting the artists. Instead, he framed the change as a willingness to listen. He noted that the piece carries meaning for many people, not just the player it honors.

The former Heat guard referred to Miami by its 305 area code in his statement. He wrote that residents deserve to see the statue and feel the energy of that 2009 night. Wade emphasized that fan noise and belief helped make that moment possible. He hopes viewers now see a better likeness of him.

Wade concluded that the monument should reflect the fans who were present that evening. He said the likeness may be his, but the space remains their house. The new statue is now visible to visitors at the arena.
