College football’s Week 9 schedule takes place in the northeastern United States on Saturday, with the University of Illinois traveling to Maryland. The game is scheduled for 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on FS1 and 890-AM. The Illinois Fighting Illini arrive in College Park with a record of 4-3. They will face the Maryland Terrapins, a team that is currently without a head coach following the firing of Mike Locksley.

Illinois quarterback Michael Clayton will start for the Illini. Clayton, a true freshman, replaced injured starter Katin Houser in the previous week. In that game, Clayton threw for 84 passing yards as Illinois defeated Oregon 21-10. He became only the third true freshman in program history to win a starting appearance. The Illini are playing this week in honor of coach Bret Bielema’s father, Arnie, who died on Sunday.

The Maryland Terrapins have lost their head coach and are attempting to stabilize their program. The game offers a neutral-site-like atmosphere for Illinois, though the road trip is substantial. The Illini are listed as 2.5-point favorites. The match will be the first of several high-profile games on the slate, which includes a contest between No. 5 Notre Dame and Navy in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The College Football Playoff Committee faces a challenging task in seeding the 12-team tournament. Upsets have dominated the early part of the season, leaving only three unbeaten teams remaining. In Week 6, No. 1 Texas lost to unranked Oklahoma, LSU lost to unranked Kentucky, and Oregon lost at home to unranked UCLA. In Week 7, No. 1 Georgia lost at home to unranked Auburn, and Texas lost at home to unranked Florida.

Week 8 continued the pattern of upsets. No. 2 BYU fell at unranked UCF, while Texas Tech, Tennessee, Iowa, and USC all lost to unranked opponents. The current top-ranked teams include No. 1 Miami, No. 9 UCLA, and No. 10 Utah. The prevalence of upsets has made the seeding process for the playoff committee more difficult than usual as November approaches.

Other notable games on the Saturday schedule include No. 22 Arizona visiting No. 13 Texas Tech at 11 a.m. on ESPN. Iowa will host No. 25 Wisconsin at 11 a.m. on Fox 32. The rivalry game between No. 17 Florida and No. 3 Georgia will take place in Atlanta at 2:30 p.m. on ABC 7. This marks the first time the game has been held in Atlanta, moving it from its traditional location in Jacksonville, Florida.

No. 2 Ohio State will host USC at 6:30 p.m. on NBC 5. Oregon will host No. 20 Northwestern at 2:30 p.m. on Peacock and 720-AM. North Carolina will play No. 1 Miami at 6:30 p.m. on ABC 7. The week’s slate reflects the unpredictability of the season, with several top-ranked teams facing difficult opponents on the road or on neutral ground.
