Saturday night's matchup at Notre Dame Stadium will proceed without Miami's top wide receiver. Malachi Toney suffered an ankle injury during Wednesday practice and underwent surgery on Thursday. The Hurricanes face the Fighting Irish on Saturday as the No. 1 team in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Miami enters the game with an 8-0 record. Notre Dame holds a 7-1 record and sits at No. 4 in the Associated Press Top 25. The Irish are ranked No. 11 in the CFP rankings. This contest serves as a rematch from last season, a game that helped send Miami to the College Football Playoff while keeping Notre Dame out.

Cooper Barkate is expected to step into a larger role for Miami. The former Duke receiver transferred to Miami with quarterback Darian Mensah after they led the Blue Devils to the ACC title last year. Mark Fletcher Jr. will also likely see increased usage in the running game. Miami coach Mario Cristobal stated that the team's focus remains on preparation despite the loss.

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman acknowledged the impact of Toney's absence. Freeman said the Hurricanes have many talented players and will find ways to put their best athletes on the field. Offensive lineman Anthonie Knapp described the game as a great opportunity and challenge to reach the team's full potential.

Sportsbooks adjusted their lines following the injury news. Notre Dame's point spread moved from a 6.5 point favorite to an 8.5 point favorite at many books. Miami has not lost a game by more than a touchdown in over three years. The Hurricanes last suffered such a defeat on Nov. 4, 2023, against N.C. State.

The CFP selection committee views this game as a critical test for Notre Dame. Hunter Yurachek, the committee chair, noted that the Irish have a chance to secure a signature win against the No. 1 ranked team. A home loss to Miami without Toney could hurt Notre Dame's chances of earning an at-large playoff berth.

Notre Dame leads the all-time series against Miami 18-9-1. The Fighting Irish are 9-1 inside their own stadium. This will be the 11th time the two teams meet while both are ranked in the AP Top 25. The rivalry includes a memorable 1988 game in South Bend and a 1990 victory by Notre Dame that ended Miami's national title hopes.

Weather conditions will differ significantly from Miami's home climate. South Florida temperatures are in the mid-80s this week. Forecasts predict low to mid-40s temperatures at kickoff in South Bend on Saturday night.
