Indian Creek eliminated Genoa-Kingston 3-0 on Monday to secure its spot in the Class 1A sectional final. The victory allowed the Timberwolves to advance to the championship match scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday against Mendota. The win cements a strong postseason run for a team that finished the regular season with a 16-2-1 record.
The match remained scoreless for the first 41 minutes despite chances from both sides. Landon Happ broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute. He followed up a corner kick that bounced back to him and struck the ball over the goalkeeper. Happ described the moment as a sudden acceleration after a slow start, noting that the shot went off the goalkeeper's hands and hit the crossbar before entering the net.
Ondrej Bartosovic, who arrived in Shabbona from Slovakia in August, played a central role in the second half. He linked up with senior Jason Brewer in the 58th minute. Brewer received a cross from Bartosovic and hit a 20-yard shot to make it 2-0. Brewer, who has taken Bartosovic in as a housemate, credited the assist for setting up his strike. He noted that Bartosovic consistently places the ball in scoring positions throughout the season.
Bartosovic provided the final assist in the 70th minute. He shot the ball, allowing Brewer to position himself for a rebound that finished the game. Brewer called the goal a statement that secured the win. He expressed pride in the team's atmosphere and the support provided by teammates, including Bartosovic, who has integrated well into the household and the squad.
Genoa-Kingston, which finished the season at 17-3-5, had beaten Indian Creek 3-2 on Oct. 13. That previous match featured a hat trick by Ayden Hernandez. Hernandez was injured early in Monday's game but played through the pain. He did not score, and the Cogs struggled to convert opportunities during a 16-minute period following the opening goal.
Genoa-Kingston coach Thomas Moore said the team entered the game with confidence. He acknowledged that Indian Creek met their challenge effectively. Moore noted that the injury to their leading scorer forced on-the-fly adjustments. He expressed pride in how the players fought through the setback, even though the final touch eluded them.
