Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Saturday that his country is awaiting a rational response from the United States regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz. He said Iranian negotiators are currently in Qatar to discuss a proposal that could reopen the vital waterway within two days if the U.S. complies with several conditions. Araghchi emphasized that Iran is prepared for both defense and diplomacy, depending on how Washington acts. He clarified that while mediators are involved, direct talks between Iran and the United States are not yet taking place.

The diplomatic efforts come as regional tensions remain high. Araghchi, speaking in an interview posted to his Telegram channel, expressed hope that the United States would choose diplomacy over other paths. He noted that the final outcome depends on the answers provided to specific questions raised by Tehran. The goal of these ongoing consultations with mediators is to prevent a return to total war in the region.

Violence continued in other parts of the Middle East over the weekend. Israeli airstrikes killed eight people in the Gaza Strip, including a four-year-old boy. According to the Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis, five people died in an attack there. Their bodies were transported to the facility for identification and treatment.

In Gaza City, the Shifa Hospital reported that three people died in a separate strike. Among the victims was the young child. One woman was also critically injured in that attack. The Israeli military stated it targeted several militants in Khan Younis and a Hamas fighter in northern Gaza. The Israeli army maintains its strikes aim at military targets, while accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields.

A ceasefire that took effect in October 2025 has largely stopped major combat operations. However, the Israeli offensive has continued almost daily. The Gaza Ministry of Health, which is part of the Hamas-led government, said more than 1,570 Palestinians have died since the truce began. This brings the total death toll from the war to over 74,500. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and militants in its counts.

In Yemen, Iran-backed Houthi rebels blamed Saudi Arabia for two aerial attacks on the Hodeidah University Faculty of Medicine. The rebels cited Al-Masirah television, a channel they control, for the announcement. No immediate casualty figures were available. The Saudi-led coalition fighting the rebels said it conducted a precision operation. The port city of Hodeidah has faced repeated strikes since fighting intensified between the Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces.

Maritime concerns also emerged in the Persian Gulf. Nakilat, the Qatari company known as Qatar Gas Transport Co., reported that its ship Al Mayeda was hit by unidentified objects on Friday night. The company said no crew members were injured and there was no environmental impact. The vessel remained operational. Qatar's Foreign Ministry condemned the attack and said authorities were investigating. It noted that such incidents risk damaging marine life and the environment.

The United Nations requested an investigation into the death of a human rights employee held by the Houthis. Mohammad el Shami has been detained since June 2024. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the Houthis never provided proof of life or status updates despite repeated requests. This is the second UN worker to die in Houthi custody. A World Food Programme employee died under similar conditions in February 2025.

Iran moved to escalate tensions with Britain on Sunday. State news agency IRNA reported that Iran designated the British Royal Navy and Royal Air Force as terrorist organizations. It also declared the MI6 intelligence service a hostile entity. The Iranian Foreign Ministry accused the UK of joining U.S. and Israeli military attacks on Iran by providing military bases and logistical support. The designations could expose people accused of working with MI6 to trial under Iranian law and may increase the risk of a military confrontation.

These developments occurred on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The various actors involved continue to monitor the situation as diplomatic and military actions unfold across the region.
