JetBlue increased its checked baggage fees for the second time in 2026, raising the cost for travelers just as the holiday season begins. The new rates apply to tickets purchased on or after Nov. 3. Most economy passengers flying within the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean will now pay at least $50 each way for their first checked bag, up from $39.

Prices rise further during peak travel periods, including Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. Passengers who pay at least 24 hours before departure will pay $55 during these busy windows. Those who wait until the final 24 hours face higher costs, paying $60 during off-peak times and $70 during peak periods.

The airline attributes the increase to rising fuel and operating costs. In an emailed statement, JetBlue explained that the adjustment helps keep base fares competitive while allowing customers to choose when to pay for extra luggage. The company noted that demand remains resilient even as fares rise in response to higher fuel prices.

Fuel costs have surged due to the war with Iran, which began in late February following U.S. and Israeli strikes. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains largely restricted, keeping global oil supply routes disrupted and jet fuel prices elevated. JetBlue executives reported that the average fuel price reached $3.91 per gallon in the summer, a 57% increase from the previous year. The price is expected to climb to $4.64 per gallon in the final three months of the year, up 85% from the same period last year.

This is not the first price hike this year. The airline raised fees in March, a move that contributed to a wave of increases among other major U.S. carriers, including Delta, United, American, and Southwest. At the start of 2026, the first checked bag on most domestic economy flights cost $35 during off-peak periods. The fee for a second checked bag has also increased, starting at $70 each way during off-peak periods and $75 during peak travel, with airport counter fees reaching $85.

Certain travelers can still avoid these costs. The airline said that eligible co-branded credit card holders and members of its loyalty program retain the ability to check bags for free.
