Chicago, Ill. (Nov. 3, 2026), Valdas Adamkus, the former president of Lithuania, turned 100 years old on Monday. The celebration coincided with a public tribute from the Draugas newspaper community, which has maintained close ties with the former head of state for decades.
Adamkus is well known in the local Lithuanian community for his long history of civic engagement in Chicago before assuming the highest office in his home country. He served as president and helped strengthen Lithuania’s democratic institutions during his tenure. His administration focused on securing the nation’s place in the European and transatlantic communities.
The Draugas editorial staff described Adamkus as a reader and friend of the publication. They noted that he was not just an observer but an active participant in Lithuanian public life. The newspaper, which began publishing in 1909, is credited with uniting generations of the diaspora through shared language and a common concern for the fate of their nation.
The tribute emphasized Adamkus’s lifelong loyalty to Lithuania. The message highlighted his example of public service, respect for the individual, and moral responsibility. The community views his life as a demonstration of the bond between a person and their homeland.
The centennial greeting came from the entire Draugas community, not just the editorial board. It reflects the shared history and values that connect Lithuanians on both sides of the Atlantic. The former president’s legacy remains a focal point for local cultural and political discussions.
