Voters in Cook County who have not yet registered can still cast a ballot on Tuesday, November 3. The Illinois State Board of Elections offers a process called Grace Period Registration for those who miss the earlier deadlines. This option is available for the 2026 election even though standard and online registration have closed.

To use this same-day registration, a voter must present two forms of identification at the polls. One of these documents must show the voter's current address. Acceptable items include a driver's license, a bank statement, a residence contract, a utility bill, or a state identification card. The same two-document rule applies to voters who wish to change the address on their existing registration.

Once a voter provides the required identification, they can register and immediately cast their ballot. The Board of Elections notes that this process applies to both new registrants and those updating their address information. No additional steps are needed after the documents are verified at the polling place.

Voters who are already registered at their current address do not need a government-issued photo ID to vote under Illinois law. However, bringing a photo ID can help resolve potential issues regarding registration status, address, or signature during the voting process. This applies to all voters heading to the polls on Tuesday.

Residents can verify their registration status before leaving home by visiting the state Board of Elections website. The lookup tool requires a first name, last name, date of birth, and five-digit ZIP code. The website also displays the specific districts in which the voter is registered and the assigned polling place for the election.

A separate polling place lookup feature is available on the same website. Users enter their ZIP code and street address to find their designated voting location. This tool helps ensure voters go to the correct site on Election Day.

The information is available on the official state website, which serves as the primary source for registration status and polling place details for the 2026 election.
