Teamsters Local 727 announced that no parking will be available at Soldier Field for the Bears game against the Buccaneers on Sunday night. The union represents employees of Metropolis, the company that operates all 15 game day lots and garages at the stadium. A picket line will be in place, and the union warned that fans could encounter strikers if the parking operator brings in non union workers.

The strike began Tuesday and involves more than 1,200 workers. Until now, many drivers have reported not noticing a change in service at other locations. That situation is set to shift as the union focuses its efforts on the high profile football event. A spokesperson for the union stated on Thursday that the lack of parking is a direct result of the ongoing labor dispute.

Metropolis issued a statement claiming it has a contingency plan in place. The company said the plan ensures Bears fans have a smooth parking experience this Sunday. The union disagrees, asking fans to support the strikers and avoid crossing the picket line. In a written statement, the union declared that Chicago is a union town and that workers must stand together.

Some fans have already adjusted their travel plans in response to the news. Kenya Thomas, who plans to attend the game, said she will take the CTA to the stadium. She noted that the route is not ideal and the timing is difficult, but it works. Thomas described the situation as a manageable inconvenience despite the disruption to her usual commute.

The strike impacts more than just the stadium. More than 250 garages and lots across the city serve members of Local 727. Some locations have live attendants, while others are automated. The union told reporters that automated garages could also face issues during the work stoppage. These problems may include customers having trouble paying, gates failing to raise or lower, cleanliness concerns, and security issues.

The list of affected locations includes major commercial sites and residential buildings. Commercial spots affected include the North Garage, Waldron Deck, and various lots at Soldier Field. Other commercial locations include garages at McCormick Place, Midway Airport, O Hare Airport, and the Obama Library. The strike also covers numerous residential buildings along Lake Shore Drive, Sheridan Road, and Michigan Avenue.

NBC 5 Investigates reached out to the Chicago Park District for comment. The district owns the lots at Soldier Field. The union has also identified an informational picket location at 1100 West Cermak in Chicago. Workers from companies including Vargas, LAZ, ACE Parking, ABM, and InterPark are part of the local and are striking.

The Bears game is scheduled for Sunday night. Fans are advised to plan their arrival accordingly given the lack of on site parking. The union will maintain its presence at the stadium lots throughout the event. No further details on the duration of the strike were provided in the initial announcement.
