One week after losing control of Congress, President Donald Trump announced a change at the top of the White House staff. He named Stephen Miller as the new Chief of Staff, replacing Susie Wiles. The announcement came on Friday via social media posts.

Wiles served as the longest-tenured Chief of Staff in Trump's career. She was the first woman to hold the position. Trump praised her work in his posts and stated she would continue working for his political organization.

Miller is a longtime advisor within the president's inner circle. He is known for designing the administration's strict immigration policies. He has been a key figure in the White House for years.

The staffing change follows the midterm elections held on Tuesday. Republicans suffered a major defeat in those races. This loss ended their hold on the majority in the House of Representatives.

Wiles had publicly shared her health status in March 2026. She disclosed a diagnosis of breast cancer that year. After months of treatment, she indicated in recent months that she no longer showed signs of the disease. Her departure occurs shortly after she shared that update.

Trump had four different Chiefs of Staff during his first term, which lasted four years. Wiles held the role longer than any of them during that period. Miller now takes over the position as the new administration faces a divided government.
