I-88 Lanes Close Overnight Starting Saturday in Aurora
Overnight closures begin this weekend as crews prepare for bridge repairs that will shift traffic patterns through November.

Drivers on Interstate 88 in Aurora should expect overnight lane closures beginning this Saturday. The Illinois Tollway announced that both directions of the highway between Eola Road and Route 59 will close during the night for rumble strip removal.
These closures are the first step in a larger project. After this initial work finishes, eastbound traffic will shift lanes to make way for repairs on the Canadian National Railway Bridge that crosses over the interstate.
The bridge requires major repairs because a vehicle struck it earlier this year. Crews will remove and replace bridge beams as part of the fix.
The Tollway says the work will continue into 2027. Additional traffic shifts are scheduled for the winter months. These changes will allow crews to build temporary pavement, install lighting and barrier walls, and create crossover pavement for a future counterflow setup.
All construction is weather dependent. Electronic and construction signs will guide drivers through the detours and ramp closures. The Tollway coordinates these efforts with the Canadian National Railway and local municipalities.
Construction zone speed limits remain in effect at all times, even when workers are not on site. Drivers must follow the Move Over Law, which requires changing lanes or slowing down when passing stopped vehicles with hazard lights on. Fines for violations can reach $10,000 or result in jail time in extreme cases. The Daily Construction Alert on the Tollway website updates daily with current status.
