Alex VanMastrigt forced a critical stop on defense that propelled Sycamore to a 42-20 victory over Belvidere on Friday. The No. 9 Spartans (7-4) defeated the No. 8 Bucs (6-4) in the Class 5A First Round playoff game at Belvidere. VanMastrigt recorded three tackles on Belvidere's final offensive series before halftime. His effort included stuffing running back Nick Alvarez on fourth down and one yard from the end zone.
The game remained competitive for much of the first half. Neither team managed a defensive stop until the late second quarter. Sycamore scored on its first three drives, while Belvidere answered on its first two. The Spartans held a 21-14 lead with 3 minutes and 59 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Jackson MacDonald intercepted a pass, and Caden Ralph ran for 28 yards on the next play to extend the lead.
VanMastrigt secured the momentum shift on the following Belvidere possession. He stopped an Alvarez rush for no gain on first down. On second down, VanMastrigt halted a 70-yard sweep by Mario Beasley for a one-yard loss. Beasley had scored on a similar play earlier in the game to tie the score at 7-7. Alvarez gained eight yards on third down, setting up the critical fourth-and-one situation.
Sycamore capitalised on the resulting turnover. Chaz Wright connected with Ben Anderson on a 29-yard touchdown pass. This was their second connection of the game and the Spartans' fourth touchdown of the quarter. The team scored three times in a span of 2 minutes and 42 seconds to lead 35-14 at the break. Both Alvarez and Sycamore running back Dylan Curtis finished the game with more than 100 rushing yards.
Coach Rob Stover described VanMastrigt as an energy player who elevates the unit through physical effort. Stover noted that the defense plays better when VanMastrigt is fast and aggressive. The Spartans have won four consecutive games since losing to Morris. During that stretch, they average 13.5 points allowed per game. The team allowed 41 points in losses to Troy-Triad and Kaneland earlier in the season.
VanMastrigt said the defense needed to change its approach after early season setbacks. He recalled the tough trips to Troy-Triad and Kaneland where the team struggled. The group decided to increase their intensity during the homecoming game against Morris. The players aim to maintain that level of effort every week moving forward.
Sycamore advances to face the No. 1 Antioch team on Saturday. The road game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Antioch is 10-0 on the season. The Spartans will look to build on their defensive performance from Friday.
The victory marks the end of a four-game losing streak for the defense. Sycamore had allowed high scores in previous games but has tightened up since the Kaneland matchup. The team continues its playoff run with a focus on physical play.
