Bowen Byram is consulting a medical specialist in a bid to overcome the final barrier in his recovery from an undisclosed upper-body injury, according to Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill. The update arrived on Monday, marking the eighth consecutive game the defenseman has missed and the ninth of the 15 he has played this season.

The timeline of Byram’s absence began on October 13, the last time he took the ice. He played 24 minutes and 37 seconds against the Pittsburgh Penguins, a game the Blackhawks won. There were no visible signs of injury during that match, and Byram was on the ice to congratulate goaltender Spencer Knight after the final horn. Two days later, on October 15, he skipped morning skate. Blashill then designated the player as day-to-day with an upper-body issue. The team has maintained that label for the past three weeks.

Blashill ruled out a concussion, a theory many fans raised after Byram took a puck to the head during the Penguins game. The coach has not specified the exact nature of the injury. Byram returned to individual skating on October 23 and joined team practices on October 24, wearing a gray non-contact jersey. He traveled with the squad for road games in Detroit and Boston last week but did not play in either contest. He was spotted in the press box in Boston.

Monday’s morning skate in Chicago saw no participation from Byram. Blashill stated the player has not suffered a setback but is not yet medically cleared to compete. This account contradicted a report by Frank Seravalli on the Chicago Sports Network pregame show on Saturday. The coach did not confirm whether Byram will travel Tuesday for the start of a three-game road trip against the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Carolina Hurricanes.

In Byram’s absence, the defensive unit has redistributed its heaviest workload among Alex Vlasic, Artyom Levshunov, Wyatt Kaiser, and Ian Cole. These four players have each averaged between 19 minutes and 30 seconds and 21 minutes and 30 seconds of ice time per game. Sam Rinzel has been limited, while Ethan Del Mastro and Kevin Korchinski have rotated in and out of the lineup.

Blashill described the group’s performance as up and down. He noted that Vlasic has been consistent since a difficult game in Utah on October 1 and that Kaiser has played well in the last four or five games despite occasional mistakes. Levshunov has been a bright spot for the unit, though he lacks a potential partner in Byram. The team has spoken openly about how Byram’s absence affects their ability to transition from defense to offense, but Blashill noted that any assessment of his impact must wait until he returns to the ice.
