Chicago Bears fans saw a new leader on the defensive line Monday night as Jeffery Simmons made his debut in a 34-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.

The Bears acquired Simmons from the Tennessee Titans on Thursday in exchange for two first-round picks. He immediately changed the dynamic of a defense that had struggled to disrupt opposing quarterbacks earlier in the season.

Simmons finished the game with six tackles, one sack, one quarterback hit, two tackles for loss, and one pass disruption. His presence forced Seattle to double-team him frequently, opening up one-on-one opportunities for other members of the defensive front.

Defensive end Montez Sweat, a former college teammate of Simmons, benefited most from the attention drawn away from him. Sweat returned from a two-game suspension with one sack, three quarterback hits, and one tackle for loss. He noted the familiarity of playing alongside Simmons again.

"It really just felt great being back with the guys," Sweat said. "Obviously being back with Jeff, bringing back a lot of memories. It felt great."

The rest of the defense capitalized on the pressure. Defensive end Austin Booker recorded three tackles and a pass defense that led to an interception. Linebacker Devin Bush added a sack, a quarterback hit, and a tackle for loss.

The Bears stopped Seattle on third down in 10 of 11 attempts. The Seahawks managed only 252 total yards of offense, their second-lowest total this season. They scored on just one of two trips into the red zone.

Wide receiver Rome Odunze said the offensive line watched Simmons on the stadium jumbotron during their plays. Odunze noted that Simmons' activity kept the defense energized.

"Man, I mean he has me up off of the bench watching third downs," Odunze said. "Watching him and watching the defense in general to see what he’s going to do next. So I think he brings the energy to them."

Cornerback Jaylon Johnson said the pressure made Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold look uncomfortable for the majority of the night. Johnson attributed the disruption to the chaos Simmons created in the backfield.

"The quarterback was definitely uncomfortable and then there was a lot of disruption," Johnson said. "You could just feel it on the backend on how disruptive he can be."

Simmons described the first few minutes of the game as nerve-wracking as he waited in the tunnel. He repeated a simple mantra to himself before entering the field under a national television audience.
