Voters across the Midwest face a critical decision on Tuesday as they cast ballots in races that will determine which party controls the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. While the national outcome hinges on dozens of contests, several races in states like Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin are central to the fight for power in Congress.
The current balance of power is narrow. Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate, while Democrats and two independents hold 47. In the House, Republicans maintain a slim majority. Both chambers are up for grabs this year, and the margins are tight enough that a handful of districts could shift the entire outcome.
In the Senate, Democrats are targeting several Republican-held seats. In Ohio, former Sen. Sherrod Brown is challenging Sen. Jon Husted, who is attempting to defend the seat previously held by Vice President JD Vance. Recent polling shows Brown holding a slight lead. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico is in a heated battle with former Attorney General Ken Paxton. This race has already seen hundreds of millions of dollars spent and could elect the state's first Democrat to the Senate since 1988.
Other vulnerable Senate seats include those held by Sen. Dan Sullivan in Alaska, Sen. Roger Marshall in Kansas, and Sen. Susan Collins in Maine. Democrats are also working to keep open seats in their column. In Michigan, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is running against Mike Rogers. In Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan faces Michelle Tafoya, and in New Hampshire, Chris Pappas is battling John Sununu.
The fight for the House is just as tight. Republicans hold a narrow lead, but redrawn district maps in many states have created new competitive races. Democrats appear likely to win at least two House seats, including California’s 1st district and Nebraska’s 2nd district. Republicans are eyeing a pickup in North Carolina’s 1st district, where incumbent Rep. Don Davis is defending his seat against challenger Laurie Buckhout.
Several other House districts in Arizona, California, and Iowa are also contested. In Pennsylvania’s 1st district, incumbent Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick faces a strong challenge from Democrat Bob Harvie. Closer to home for Midwesterners, political experts are watching the open House seat in Iowa’s 2nd district. In Wisconsin’s 3rd district, incumbent Rep. Derrick Van Orden is facing a robust challenge that could flip the seat.
These races will be closely monitored on Election Day. The outcome in these specific districts will help determine whether the balance of power in Washington shifts, with implications for national legislation and policy in the coming two years.
